Description and Features

1) A library containing an initial amount of 5300 books on the various Islaamic sciences [only Arabic] organized into appropriate categories and identity cards for many of the books and authors

2) Highly advanced searching capabilities, including choosing single or multiple books to search in, ignoring or including the various forms of the letter Hamza, searching for book titles, searching within the books, searching in the comments section of the books, searching for the authors, and searching for multiple words either by “and” or using “or” criteria

3) Ability to edit the books, bookmark favorite locations, open multiple books at the same time, remove or keep the Tashkeel (Arabic punctuation marks) from texts (when available), and to associate books of Sharh (commentaries) with their respective Matn (text – when available)

4) Ability to change background image of the application, and changing the font and color of various levels of text and background in the software (e.g. main text, comments, titles, footnotes, etc.)

5) Ability to export the books to HTML files, (.doc) files (requires Microsoft Word on the device), and (.bok) files (requires the empty version of the library) with various export options

6) Ability to update the library and download new books from within the software

Installation

1) The file that you download is a zip file. Open the file.

2) Run the (.exe) file within the zip archive.

Run the executable file

3) A dialog box should appear. Click “Browse” to choose the location where you want to extract the files of the library then click “Install” to begin extraction. Note: Choose a drive where there are at least 4 to 6 Gigabytes of free space.

4) Wait for the files to be extracted to your desired location.

Wait for the extraction of the files to finish.

5) After the extraction is done. Go to the destination folder that you chose in Step 3) above and you should see a folder named “Library“. Open that folder and run the “Setup.exe” file in it.

Run the "Setup.exe" file.

6) A dialog box should come up. Click the button “إستعراض” to choose a location to install the setup and shortcut files of the library to. This installation requires only about 20 MB of space. Then click “موافق” to begin installation.

7) Wait for the installation to finish.

8) After the installation finishes, the library should run.

Adding More Books

There are four ways by which you can add new books:

A] Adding New Books from within the Library:

1) After you upgrade to the latest edition, as shown in the above steps, open the library. Click on the menu item “ترقية حية” then click the submenu item “ترقية البرنامج والكتب الآن“.

Open the "ترقية حية" menu then the "ترقية البرنامج والكتب الآن" submenu item.

2) A dialog box should come up. If there is internet connection, it should search for new program upgrade and new books. If there are any new books, it should show them as checkbox items. Choose the items that you want and click “تحميل تلقائي” to begin downloading them from within the library.

3) After you begin downloading the book(s) you chose, wait until the download finishes.

Wait while the book download finishes.

4) After the download is finished, restart the library and the new books should be added to the library.

B] Downloading New Books from Shamela.ws:

1) Visit the website www.shamela.ws.

2) Choose a category of books. Then choose the book you want to download. You can also search by book title or author name. The books are in (.bok) format that is recognized by the library. However, what you download is compressed in a zip archive. So, after you download, extract the content of the zip archive to get the (.bok) file.

3) Now go open the library itself. Click the menu item “شاشات” then click the submenu item “استيراد ملفات“.

4) A new window should appear. Browse to the location where you extracted the new book in (.bok) format. Click on the book (or books) you want to import, and drag it over to the bottom list. Then click the lightning icon at the bottom-right side of the screen whose comment reads “استيراد الكتب إلى البرنامج“.

Import the new book(s) to the library.

5) After that, a confirmation message should come up telling you that the import was successful.

C] Downloading Books from IslamPort.com:

1) Visit the page islamport.com/index2.html.

Visit the IslamPort website.

2) Choose a category. Then download a book. You can also search by book title or author name. Extract the content of the zip file. Then follow the same steps as discussed for the Shamela.ws website above.

D] Downloading Books from alMeshkat.net:

1) The website alMeshkat.net hosts a massive collection of books, encyclopedias, and programs, as well as other services, for free. Visit the page http://www.almeshkat.net/books/index.php.

Visit the alMeshkat.net website.

2) Browse through the different categories and download the book(s) you want. If it is book designed for the Shaamila library, follow the same steps as those described for Shamela.ws above to import them to the library.

  1. I recently downloaded the Shamela but the menus and text is garbled (ie not in Arabic). Can anyone help? I download from islamport, version 2.3 which took 3 days.

    Maybe it has to do with your computer’s language settings. Depending on your system, go to your system’s language options and change the language settings to Arabic. In Windows XP and Vista:

    1) Go to “Control Panel” and open “Regional and Language Options”
    2) Change all the language related list boxes to Arabic (the one that is most important is the language for non-unicode programs which is found in the last tab in XP while in Vista it is in the Administrative tab labeled “Change System Locale”. In any case, change all available language-related options to Arabic and restart your computer. Inshaa’Allaah that will fix your problem.

    Note: In case you can’t find the language Arabic in some of the lists, you will need to install them from your Windows CD.

    If after the restart the problem still persists, you can try downloading the software from the official link which is provided in this blog, and this is the link which the developers’ website has posted.

    1) When you install the package, choose a location to extract the files to. Let us assume you extract it to X:\Folder

    2) Then go to X:\Folder and run the file “setup.exe”

    That should go without any problem.

    I received your comment early but was busy installing Ubuntu on a virtual machine on my Vista to try it myself before answering. It seems that I need more time to download certain packages so I will give you the suggestion and you try it:

    Try installing the software Wine for your Linux and then try running the Shaamila through it. I saw on the Shaamila’s blog that these last versions can be run using Wine:

    You can search an open book by clicking on the icon in the toolbar that reads “بحث في القرآن الكريم\ الكتاب الحالي” and then enter the search term(s) you like.

    You can search single or multiple books at the same time by clicking the on the binocular icon titled “بحث”. Then select the book(s) that you like to search in, by checking their checkboxes and then type in the search term(s) you want.

    Brother as it is illustrated in the image when you open the Library folder it should contain the Setup.exe file and three folders along with it. If you see the folders but don’t see the Setup.exe file then it could have been deleted by an anti-virus software falsely.

    You could try extracting the file again to another location and if the anti-virus asks to delete the file ignore it. If you still don’t see the Setup.exe file then try it on another computer to see if there is the same problem. If there is not then it could indicate that there is a problem in your computer.

    Actually this program is in (.exe) format and can normally only run on Microsoft Windows. I don’t think you can find an alternative to it on a mobile device like the Android or the iPad.

    What you can do instead is to download books that you want to read in PDF format or TXT or any other format and read it on those devices. It is better than nothing.

  38. I don’t know about a version which has 5111 books. This version is only 1800 books. You can use the links above to download. There is also the 8333 books in the other post where you can use the links to download them.

    In order to to change the language of your Windows system, go to the Control Panel (which you can find in my computer or the start menu) then open the Regional and Language Options. Then change all the language options to the language you want.

    If your question is about having difficulty viewing the conents of the library, simply enable support for Arabic in the Language Options in the Control Panel which I pointed to above.

    I have already written a post about the Maktaba Shamila for mobile phones. Visit that post and you will find that all the books are available as text files in zip packs. All you need on any mobile phone is simply a text reader with Arabic support to view any of the books.

    Insha’Allah I will update that post or write a new post about this issue in the near future if time is available by Allah’s will.

    I have not worked with converting PDF files to BOK before and honestly don’t know how it can be done. It depends on the nature of the PDF file that you want to convert.

    For the time being, forgive me for not being sble to provide more information but I can recommend searching for it in the Shamila forums or in Google.

    This has been reported to me before. However, at best guess it is simply a false positive warning from Avast. I have scanned it with Avira AntiVir and it finds no virus in it.

    Regarding export, open the Shamila. In the toolbar containing different icons, click the icon which reads “تصدير الكتب” which is in the form of a blue arrow pointing to the left with two small documents. In the dialog box that opens, select as many as you need and specify that you want to export them in .bok.

    Brother, I currently use Shamela on Windows XP, but I wanted to buy a new laptop that comes pre-installed with Windows 7 64 Bit Home Edition. Does the Shamela program work properly on Windows 7 64 Bit Home? Or Does it only work on the 32 Bit version of Windows 7?

    Also, do you know if there are any plans to release it for Linux and Mac OS X?

    Run-time error ’372′;

    Failed to load control ‘FileDownloader’ from . Your version of may be outdated. Make sure you are using the version of the control that was provided with your application.

I just checked through the official Shamila website and there doesn’t seem to be anything about it. However, I have read reports from users about successfully using it on Windows 7. I don’t really know about 64 bit. I hope it works without problems. As for Linux, you can try running it with Wine, or with an application called Thwab that is made to import Shamela .bok books. For Wine, you may Google how to add support for Arabic fonts. I haven’t used any of these myself.

    As for Mac, I do not know of any version for it. However there is a group that say they are currently working on converting the format of the Shamela books for their free iOS application iShamela and that they aim to make an app for Mac, for Android, and for Linux in the near future insha’Allah.     Well, try clicking on the menu item itself rather than pressing Ctrl+U. If the problem is still there, try installing the VB runtime files:

    Microsoft support pages say that error 372 occurs when you install an application for a certain user only, then you run the application from a different user on the same computer. May be you can try re-installing the application on your user.

    I don’t know of a way to download ALL the files the at once. You can, however, do this:
    1. Install a download manager like Gigaget.
    2. Then download the Firefox extension FlashGot to link Gigaget with Firefox.

    3. Then you visit the IslamPort website. Open the section of books you like (e.g. أصول الفقه).
    4. Right-click an empty space. Choose FlashGot All (Ctrl+F3).

    5. A dialog box will pop up from Gigaget allowing you to choose the files you want to download.
    6. Deselect everything except for the rar files.

    There you go, you just put the entire section of أصول الفقه on download. Do the same for the other sections.

    There is no official iPad version. There is, however, an application called Shamela in the App Store and they are trying to develop it further and port more books into it. Maybe you could try that out.

    Another option is to export the Shamila book that you want in .txt format and read it on the iPad using a txt reader. If you search in Google, you’ll see that there is also a collection of Shamila books in PDB to read in iSilo on iPad or iPhone.

To search for a word (or words), you must first select the books on the left-most panel (by checking individual books or selecting the whole collection, but making sure that the book names are checked), and entering the search words on the right panel.   91. That is an interesting question.

    I would have a hard time believing that the the Muslim scholars were worried about the content of their books being made available to as many people as possible. They would actually endorse it outright. The last they would have on their mind is the money. Plus sharing Islamic knowledge among Muslims has always been a sacred obligation.

    The only real issue would be with the companies that publish their books (i.e. for the modern writers). But again that would be when some other company would just want to make money out of publishing it again. Again I would have a hard time believing that they would be worried about somebody converting the book into a .bok or .txt format for other Muslims to benefit from.

    So, for the purely Islamic books in the library in this post, I wouldn’t worry about redesigning them in a different format and making them available for people with special needs. Plus, you have all the right to ‘sell’ this work because you are putting effort into it by doing the processing and conversion.

    As for the other books in the library that have to do more with general literature, history, or others, I really cannot speak on that. Maybe you can consult the original owners and designers of this library, at the following address:

    When you open the dialog box for updating “الترقية الحية”, does it proceed to display a list of books or does it get stuck on the screen waiting for an internet connection? If it persists on that, maybe you can try closing/opening the Shamila and trying again?

    As far as I know, there is no other free library out there. I would, however, wonder at what else would somebody need from a library? The Maktaba Shamila provides an excellent set of features.

    By the way, the official Shamila website says that they are currently redesigning the entire library so that it can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux and so that it would run faster. So you may keep a look out for that.

    There are unofficial ways to do that (I myself have tried it on iOS devices). But the method is mainly about using exported text files of the Shamila and reading them by a txt reader on any of those devices. There are ready packs on the internet where people have exported each set of books in the Shamila into a zip package of txt files which you can download and read on your device by a txt reader.

    The above method obviously lacks almost every feature that the real Shamila offers. The official website (shamela.ws) says that they are currently working on making the Shamila available for other devices (like Mac, Linux, iOS, and later others) so insha’Allah we will be waiting for that.

    Most likely, you opened the update file in the wrong place. When you download the update file, you have to put it in the directory where you have the main files and folders of your Shamila. After putting the file there, then you open it.

    So, I would advise that you put the update file (3.46) in the main directory of your Shamila folder and then run the update file there. Insha’Allah this will fix it.

    Well, maybe you can try extracting the files on a faster computer and then transferring them by an external HD to your computer? The results would pretty much be the same.

    The only way to get the files is extracting the contents of the zip file that you downloaded, so I believe there is no other way.

    The Shamila allows you to choose a standard font for viewing the content of the books. So only one font is used throughout the whole text, and it cannot be possible that you have a different font for different parts of a book.

    For this reason, I believe that you may have a problem with your system language settings of your computer. You can try the steps mentioned at this link to correct that:

    What are you trying to upload? If you are trying to upload the Maktaba Shamila then there is no need to do this because you can already download it from many online servers. If, however, you are trying to upload individual books then again there is no need to do this because the books are available for download at:

    So just give your brother the link to the site above and he can download the books there. As for the virus warning, if your antivirus is Avira then this is a known issue and it is a false-positive. This means that there is no real virus but Avira is thinking that there is a virus inside the application, and this doesn’t really have any weight because the people who built this Maktaba Shamila are building an Islamic software and the content of the software testifies to this, so how can they think about putting a virus inside? This doesn’t make sense. So just ignore Avira on this warning.

  203. Go to AVG’s settings and put Maktaba Shamila in the exclusion list for scanning, i.e. so that AVG doesn’t scan Maktaba Shamila or doesn’t recognize it as a virus. You can learn how to do this in AVG’s help documentation.

    I recently downloaded Shamela but I can’t seem to add books to the program. Whenever I download a book (from the Shamela website) I can only open up the file on its own rather than in the Shamela program. I followed the directions listed above and on the official website listed here:

    but to no avail. After I hit the lightning rod to add a book, the program says I successfully added the book, but when I search for the title, it’s not found.

    On the other hand, books that are included in automatic updates are able to be added to the program.

    Second: During installation, a few sections (e.g. ‘Aqeedah’) were corrupt and did not install. Is there anyway way to download that entire section or do I have to choose each book from the website one at a time?

    As for the book importing problem, may the program does in fact add the book but it is being categorized in a different category in the book list? When viewing the book categories dialog box after adding a book, try scrolling down to see if the book is in a new category. Also try re-starting the Shamela after adding the book.
    If none of these things work, maybe you can try re-installing the Shamela? It is weird that an error occurred during installation of the program. You can also review the steps for adding books at this link:

    As for the ‘aqeedah books, if these are not installed at all, you can just use the automatic update in the program and just select the entire ‘aqeedah section for the books to download. If, however, the old books are not in the automatic update, then probably you need to all the books one by one. But an easier way to download them is to visit this link:

    As for converting a book into .bok format, I don’t know how to do that. You may ask the Shamila forum about it.

    As for importing books, I have explained it in the post above so please read it there. As for deleting I believe it is from غرفة التحكم panel.

    You can try looking for your desired book in .bok format on the http://shamela.ws/ website so that you don’t get this headache.

    Please open Control Panel ~ Regional and Language Options ~ then enable the support for unicode programs. Also try changing system locale to Arabic, which is not needed though.

    Brother the Shamila file that you download is a zip archive. Use a zip archive software to extract the files to a certain location that you choose, and after the extraction is complete go to that folder to open the _shamela.exe file to run the software. You can use 7zip for the extraction:

    This warning by AVG is probably a false positive (this means that the antivirus mistakenly thinks the program contains a virus while in reality it doesn’t). The Shamela group have clarified this in an article on their website:

    To overcome this problem, please open your AVG antivirus software, go the section which deals with ‘Exceptions’, and add the shamela.exe in the bin folder to the list of exceptions so that it doesn’t recognize it as a virus.

    Well, I really haven’t tried installing the Shamilah on Windows 7 myself. Other people have also reported problems with it. Maybe you can try changing the language and system locale from the Control Panel? Try adding support for Arabic language from the Regional and Language Options in the Control Panel.

    Brother there should be no need for WinRAR. You just need to download and run the file and it will ask you to choose a place to extract the files to. Once the extraction is done you can run the _shamela.exe file and the library will open.

    there is no shamela’s for linux OS.
    but you still can open shamela’s bok’s in linux via “thawab” program.
    you will find it in ubuntu software center. or synaptic.
    anyways ,thawab is not as good as shamela’s but it works :-).

    I’m afraid I don’t have access to Windows 8 to try it myself. Try looking through the help files of your Windows or on the microsoft support base for how to enable support for unicode programs or support for right-to-left languages.

    It depends on the type of your mobile device. If it is an iOS device (iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch) then there is an app for that in the AppStore:

    If it is an android-based device then so far there is no official version for it but I have come across some apps for that in the Google Store. Search for it and you should be able to find it.

    If it is none of these, then you can put the text files of any of the books you want on your mobile device and use any simple text reader to read the books. Refer to this post for more info:
